For Lily, the service could have lasted a lifetime. She didnât want to hear the inevitable bad news, but all too soon, Giorgio was right at the door.
âAh, Martina, Lily,â he said.
Lily nodded. âYes.â She scoured Martinaâs face.
But the girl only frowned at the floor.
Giorgio smiled. âI have come to a decision. Lily, I would like to speak with Martina first. When Iâm done, I will call you in.â
Lily nodded, ducking her head down to hide the swell of emotions that coursed through her. And the fact that Giorgio wanted to talk to Martina first, well, surely that only meant one thing. He was going to give Martina the chance to accept the position of head chef before he spoke to Lily.
Her cheeks burning, she averted her eyes from the curious stares of all the kitchen staff as she passed down the line. Well, at least her mother would be pleased!
With all the energy of a wooden doll, she started chopping mushrooms for the vegetable chef. He sweated over a pile of tomatoes alongside.
In five minutes flat, Martina gently patted Lily on the shoulder. âHeâs ready for you,â she said.
Lily scoured Martinaâs face. Joy flooded the girlâs features, and her eyes sparkled. She whisked away, calling out instructions to the kitchen at large.
Lilyâs fingers curled around the handle of her knife. She placed it down, precisely. âThey are all done,â she said.
âVery good, Chef,â the chef said.
Lily glanced around the kitchen and slipped out of the room.
Giorgio was at Marcoâs desk. âWell, my dear. Do sit down.â
Lily slid down into a chair.
âCongratulations, Lily,â Giorgio said. âYou are to be Valentinoâs next head chef. Martina has happily accepted the role of chef de cuisine. It became obvious to me that your skills, Lily, are more suited to managing staff, to designing and creating recipes, and sourcing ways to obtain our produce and designing menus, while Martina is best employed following instructions and cooking. I am delighted to have come to a decision, and welcome you to this most important, highly valued position. I am certain that you will do us proud.â
Lily covered her mouth with her hand. Slowly, a smile spread across her face. âI cannot tell you how much this means to me,â she said. âI promise you this. I will never, ever let you down!â
